Albert Almora Jr. is headed to the IL after a scary collision with the outfield wall in the Mets win over the Orioles on Tuesday night, but fortunately, the center fielder appears to have avoided a serious injury.
After running full speed into the wall in the eighth inning, Almora walked off under his own power after nearly making a spectacular catch on a triple by Austin Hays, and has been diagnosed with a shoulder contusion, avoiding a concussion after hitting the wall face-first and falling to the ground, where he remained for several minutes.
Outfield prospect Khalil Lee was called up to replace Almora.
Almora appeared to be in good spirits after the game, tweeting “I caught it…” when of course, he was unable to hang onto the ball after making contact with the wall, though it would have been a spectacular catch if he was able to hang on.
Almora already has one web gem to his credit this season, making a leaping catch up against the center field wall in a game against the Nationals on April 25. Offensively, he has just one hit in 21 at-bats this season.
