A triple hearbreak for the Giants in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets: starter Alex Cobb left the game with an apparent groin injury in the fifth inning, and was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor strain in between games.
With one out and two on in the bottom of the fifth, Cobb started to run towards first base on Jeff McNeil’s grounder down the first-base line; the ball ended up going down into the right field corner for a two-run double, and Cobb pulled up after a few steps and stopped, grabbing at the inside of his leg.
Cobb had to cover first base quite a bit in the first four-plus innings, including two batters earlier when a Travis Jankowski grounder to first went from potential double-play ball to 3-6 force at second to fielder’s choice, J.D. Davis ruled safe at second after replay review.
After the McNeil double, Cobb was tended to by trainers on the field and quickly removed, leaving the Giants bullpen to scramble, and was eventually replaced by Dominic Leone, who retired Starling Marte before giving up a game-tying double to Francisco Lindor.
Cobb had thrown just 60 pitches to that point, so he was likely to pitch much deeper in the game, and extra innings meant the Giants had to get six innings from the bullpen ahead of whatever they may need behind Logan Webb in Game 2.
The team did recall RHP Yunior Marte to replace Cobb on the roster, but now must find a replacement for Cobb in a rotation that had helped the Giants' staff post an MLB-best 2.20 ERA entering play Tuesday.
