Edwin Diaz’s younger brother Alexis was on the field in tears when his brother was taken off the field in a wheelchair earlier this week, and on Friday night, he paid a touching tribute to his injured brother.

Shortly after Diaz completed surgery to repair a tear in the patellar tendon of his right knee, Alexis took the mound in relief for a Puerto Rico that was trying to advance in the World Baseball Classic without its star closer. As Alexis made his way to the mound, a familiar song played through the speakers in Miami.

Alexis took his warmup throws to the sound of trumpets, which became Diaz’s trademark entrance song with the Mets last season, as Alexis honored his brother, who will likely miss the entire 2023 season after injuring his knee while celebrating Puerto Rico’s dramatic win over the Dominican Republic.

The crowd loved it, and the video board showed Diaz’s jersey hanging in the bullpen.
