Daniel Murphy is one step closer to making his return to the majors after three years out of the league.

The former Mets and Nationals star had his contract with the independent Long Island Ducks purchased by the Angels on Monday, and the 38-year-old will report to Triple-A. Ducks general manager Michael Pfaff announced the news, also adding that Murphy’s former Mets teammate, Ruben Tejada was taking his place on the Ducks roster.

Murphy announced his return to baseball before the start of this season, after not playing since his last big league campaign with the Rockies in 2020. In 37 games with the Ducks of the Atlantic League, Murphy hit .331 with two home runs and an .861 OPS.

Murphy, best known for carrying New York offensively to a World Series appearance in 2015, hit .288 in seven seasons with New York, then tormented his former team as a member of the Nationals, where he was an All-Star in two of his three seasons in Washington.
