Billy Eppler denies reports of Pete Alonso contract negotiations

An SI.com report suggested that the Mets and Pete Alonso were "on the same page" for the financials of a contract extension, but far apart on the length of a deal, though general manager Billy Eppler denied that report on Wednesday.

"While we understand the media and public interest in player contract situations, we strongly believe in keeping those conversations private," Eppler said in a statement to reporters on Wednesday. "Any circulating reports do not accurately reflect our conversations with Pete."

For Alonso, he wouldn't comment on any potential progress in extension negotiations, but once again reiterated his fondness for playing in New York and with the Mets.

"I love it here. I love New York," Alonso said. "It's been such a blessing and an honor to be part of this organization. New York doesn't feel like home, because it is home…Citi Field is a great place to play, the fans are super passionate and care so much.

"It's been nothing short of an honor. It's been awesome."

Alonso, who has 45 home runs on the season, is a free agent at the end of next season.
