Shortly after dealing closer David Robertson to the Marlins, Mets general manager Billy Eppler hinted to reporters that he will be entertaining offers on other veterans to further become deadline sellers.
“We were faced with where our club was at this time in the season,” Eppler said. “Had a number of inquiries on our players, and we were listening. In this circumstance the value of the players we acquired exceeded our expectations, so we executed it.”
Amid reports that league executives believe Justin Verlander could also be traded, other names like Max Scherzer, Mark Canha, and Tommy Pham will also likely be brought up in trade rumors in the coming days.
Asked if the trade of Robertson for two low-level prospects means the sell-off is on, Eppler reiterated that they will consider offers that come their way.
“Listening to where clubs are when they call us. If the valuations on the players that they want to offer exceed what we have here in the big leagues, that’s kind of measured just with where you are today and also looking at future control of the players,” Eppler said. “If economic equation points to us making a deal that's best for the organization, Then we have to really consider it.”
