Boomer & Gio 'disheartened' by Pete Alonso news, but part of it was his own doing
Boomer and Gio agree that the Mets simply didn't seem to want Pete Alonso back in Queens amid reports that they are preparing to pivot from trying to retain their homegrown slugger.
"I'll tell you what, they really don't want him," Boomer said. "They have their heart set on a certain number, and they will not pay him. They will not go over that.
"It's a little disheartening for us Met fans. I would have loved to have seen him in this lineup and see what it would look like. Maybe he would have had a bounceback year, but at the moment, it doesn't look like he's gonna be here. If he's not here, that's somewhat disappointing."
Gio would have like to see Alonso stay in Queens, especially after his magical moments in the playoffs, but he believes David Stearns is doing exactly what he was brought in to do, which is take emotion out of it and do what he feels is best for the short and long-term health of the club.
"It's all because of what happened last year and the season he had," Gio said. "He would have gotten more money and maybe an extra year if he had a typical Pete Alonso season, and he didn't. David Stearns, it doesn't matter who you are. If you fit the profile of a guy that he doesn't want on the team, which is a declining, past 30-year-old player that just had his worst season, I don't care if there are Polar Bear T-shirts out there or bobbleheads scheduled.
"Those are the really tough decisions you have to make as a general manager, and I appreciate it. But I'm gonna miss him."
