Boomer & Gio say Mets healthy lineup has no excuses for struggles: 'This is your team'

The Mets are a mess, falling to two games below .500 after losing their fifth straight series on Thursday, the latest series defeat coming against a Reds team that entered the three-game set with a 14-20 record.

Boomer says the worst part about the team’s struggles, particularly offensively, is that the lineup is at full strength, yet still has been shut out seven times already this season, the most in the majors.

“Their starting lineup is healthy,” Boomer said. “Everybody that’s playing, maybe with the exception of Mark Canha in left field, is who the fans want on the field. They want [Brett] Baty at third base, they want [Francisco] Alvarez as the catcher. [Starling] Marte and [Francisco] Lindor aren’t having great seasons so far.

“Everyone is where they’re supposed to be. They don’t have a lot of injuries in that regard. Their pitching, yes, I understand the problems with [Max] Scherzer and losing [Edwin] Diaz and the implosion of their starting pitching, but their everyday players are here and they’re healthy.”

Gio says he saw the team’s offensive woes coming before the season even started, but for some reason, Mets fans had confidence in the lineup as constructed, though now, many are calling for the team’s top prospects to replace the veterans Buck Showalter and company trusted to contribute.

“You can’t be shut down by the Reds in that ballpark for three straight games,” Gio said. “It’s not like they’re decimated with injuries. They’re not playing guys with No. 75 on their back that they got from the Rumble Ponies. This is the team. this is the team that everyone called up asking what I was so negative about. Well, this is your team that won 101 games last year. Those guys, losing, getting swept, losing series to the worst teams in baseball, and they can’t hit.”
