The Mets have tried calling up their top prospects, holding a closed-door meeting, and still can't seem to get things going in 2023.
When assessing what the team can do to turn things around, Boomer and Gio realized that in this moment, there's really not much that can be done other than hope things will get better.
"Let's get real. They don't know how to fix it," Gio said. They can't. At this point in the season, there's nothing else they can do.
"You brought up Vientos, you brought up Alvarez, you brought up Baty…what else do you do? You're not gonna make some big trade in June. Nobody's going to do it. So this is the team. These are the guys."
Boomer says the Mets can get more from the managing department, and that all it takes is a winning streak to get rolling, but it starts with Buck Showalter lighting a fire in that clubhouse.
"Buck Showalter's gotta get these guys going," Boomer said. "He's gotta get off his ass."
Gio doesn't share the belief that anything can be done to turn things around, at least not until the trade deadline. But by then, it might be too late.
"I just don't agree, and I don't think it's gonna happen either," Gio said. "Who knows how deep they're gonna be buried by August and September with the way things are going?"
