Boomer & Gio watch Mets pitchers they never heard of: 'This is the most expensive team in baseball?'

The Mets pulled out a much-needed win in game two of Sunday's doubleheader against the Nationals, but the talk on Monday morning between Boomer and Gio was the stable of unrecognizable faces coming out of the bullpen in relief of Max Scherzer.

"Everybody that comes in after Max Scherzer is someone you never heard of in your life, and you wonder, 'How is this the most expensive team in baseball?'" Gio said.

"Welcome to the 2023 Mets, everybody, because this is what you got."

Brooks Raley, fresh off the IL, was the first to come out in relief of Scherzer in the sixth inning. Righty Jeff Brigham was next, pitching a scoreless seventh, and 28-year-old Zach Muckenhirn finished the victory off with two innings of one-run ball.

Those names make up a Mets bullpen that has largely been a strength this season, but after adding Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, and Jose Quintana to the staff this past winter, it's jarring for Boomer and Gio to see four innings eaten up by pitchers they've never heard of.

"They have their top three starters supposedly all healthy," Boomer said. "Then you see the Mets with all these guys that nobody expected to see."
