Boomer not panicking over Mets struggles, while Gio also expects team to go on a run

The Mets have dropped nine of their last 11 games, and were just swept by the lowly Tigers in Detroit after getting shut out for the sixth time already this season.

Meanwhile, one of their expected aces in Max Scherzer was roughed up by the typically light-hitting Tigers, raising his season ERA to 5.56.

Still Boomer isn't sounding the alarm.

"I'm not panicking about any of this stuff," Boomer said. "I'm not getting crazy. I'm frustrated by it, but there's such a long way to go, and really a lot of guys are not hitting over this span.

"They went 2-9, but before that they were fine. They were 14-7. They were OK. They were hanging in there."

Gio does have his concerns about the Mets, but he also is expecting the team to return home this weekend and go on a run to get back on track.

"I actually think that in the six-game home stand against the Rockies and the Reds, with what happened to them out in Detroit, that they're gonna play well, and then they go to the Nationals after that," Gio said. "I do think that they're gonna go on a run here and I do think that they're going to play better."

But Gio's long-term outlook for the team this season isn't as optimistic as Boomer's if Scherzer isn't going to return to form, which he isn't sure is going to happen at this point.

"Projecting how this team is built, that's what scares me," Gio said. "I need to see Max Scherzer be really good this regular season and towards the end to the regular season before I believe that they're gonna have a good Max Scherzer in the postseason.

"And if we don't see that at all, there's a better chance that this guy is cooked than we get Cy Young Max Scherzer. And at that point, then you're trading away guys at the deadline to try to get another starting pitcher that doesn't always work out. So that's what is the big concern for me is you basically have a dud right now. A $40 million dud at the top of the rotation."
