Boomer & Gio: Time for Mets fans to celebrate Juan Soto's arrival, but now, the pressure is on
Boomer and Gio offered their reactions to a historic night in New York baseball, as the Mets plucked Juan Soto from the Yankees thanks to a 15-year, $765 million deal to change the landscape of power in the city.
It was a celebratory occurrence for Mets fans like Boomer and Gio, but they also warned that with this jubilation comes the pressure of making sure the massive investment is worth it, and that means winning a World Series.
"It's a huge moment for the Mets organization, stealing a Yankee in that way," Gio said. "This is just the first step. This is 15 years of this guy possibly being the highest paid player in baseball.
"He has to win. He has to be great. He has to deliver a World Series. And this contract better not stop them from spending more money, because then I'm really gonna get pissed."
With Steve Cohen's riches and his seemingly relentless desire to bring a championship to Queens, it likely isn't the end of their spending, and Boomer says it can't be, because there is more work to be done in terms of improving the roster, and then, once Opening Day arrives, the work begins on the field, and Soto will have to show he is worth the richest contract in sports history.
"This comes along with a lot of pressure and expectations, and it should," Boomer said. "After five years, if they want to keep him and he opts out, they have to raise his salary of $51 million to $55 million for the rest of the contract. It's an insane contract. Steve Cohen has stepped up to the plate here.
"Right now, it's exciting. Hopefully in the next five years, he was the missing piece. But now it will be interesting to see what the Mets do on top of it."
