Boomer and Gio's one big concern for Mets come playoff time

The Mets are rolling, are at 70 wins on the season with a 6.5-game lead in the National League East, and just got back the best pitcher in baseball in Jacob deGrom.

Meanwhile, Francisco Lindor is finally playing like the star he was in Cleveland, and the team has arguably the best closer in baseball in Edwin Diaz.

So, what keeps Boomer and Gio up at night when wondering what would derail New York in a playoff series?

For both, it’s the worry that the Mets don’t have a sturdy enough bridge to Edwin Diaz.

“For me, we’re in the dog days of august right now, and it’s great to be a Met fan and to wake up to know that we have a healthy rotation,” Boomer said during Monday’s show. “I still wonder about, if you want to talk about seven innings for the starters…I still worry about [Adam] Ottavino, [Trevor] May.”

Ottavino has been solid this season with a 2.30 ERA, while May just recently returned from an extended IL stint. Both would figure to be leading candidates for that role as the eighth inning man if the starter goes seven in a late and close playoff game, but that isn’t enough to keep Boomer and Gio worry-free.

“There’s not a guy, that eighth-inning, you have a 3-2 lead, we still don’t know who that guy is going to be,” Gio said.
