Boomer: Carlos Carrasco pitched himself out of Mets playoff rotation

Carlos Carrasco was knocked around for four runs in three innings of work against the lowly Marlins on Monday night, and is pitching to a 4.46 ERA over his last eight starts.

With decisions lingering for the Mets about a potential fourth starter in the playoffs, Boomer says Carrasco just helped Buck Showalter with that decision.

“I would think he pitched himself right off the starting rotation in the playoffs,” Boomer said. “Maybe an inning or two out of the bullpen, or if someone goes haywire, they would bring him in and he can go three or four innings if they have to.”

Taijuan Walker is the other likely option, though he has struggled at points too this season, while Carrasco has extensive postseason experience from his time with Cleveland. But Carrasco’s recent outings have Boomer convinced that the veteran righty can’t be trusted in October.

“The beginning of these games for him lately have been trouble for the Mets,” Boomer said. “When you take the ball and it’s this late in the season, it all rests on your arm. That’s the way it is. That’s the pressure and the privilege of the pressure, and he wasn’t up to the task.”
