Elly De La Cruz and the Reds have now won 10 straight games, catapulting themselves into first place in the NL Central behind promising youngsters, none more electric than De La Cruz.
Watching Cincinnati’s rise has Boomer wondering why the Mets can’t generate such a can’t-miss prospect.
“This De La Cruz, man,” Boomer said. “They bring him up, and all of a sudden, he takes over baseball. I always feel like we never get that guy. When was the last time we had a guy like that?”
Gio noted that Pete Alonso set the rookie home run record and has been one of the top power hitters in baseball since making his debut with the Mets, and there are other homegrown players on the team that have turned into productive players, but Boomer is craving to see young talent that are an instant spectacle, like two prized youngsters the Mets boasted back in the 80s.
“We knew Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden were can’t miss,” Boomer said. “Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil deserve some of that, I would think, but they’re really good baseball players, but they’re not truly difference makers. Aaron Judge is a difference maker. De La Cruz is a difference maker.”
