Boomer has sense of impending doom with Christian Scott due to Tommy John epidemic

Christian Scott, the Mets' No. 2 ranked prospect, was pulled after just 77 pitches on Monday afternoon, as the team tries to protect their hyped young arm after he allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings of work.

Monday was the first time Scott pitched on normal rest in the majors, and Carlos Mendoza told reporters that the pitch count limit was set at around 75 pitches before he even took the mound.

Still, despite the precautionary measures, Boomer has a sense of impending doom for the promising prospect.

"Do you think they've scheduled the surgery for Scott yet? That's gonna happen," Boomer said, lamenting the high rate of Tommy John surgeries in baseball, and worrying that Scott could join that extensive list.

"It's so frustrating. I'm trying not to be one of these hardcore lunatic fans that get frustrated. I just feel like that is the trend in major League Baseball. It's unfortunate."

Gio pointed to the precautions in place for Scott, but Boomer says other pitchers have had similar practices in place, and it didn't save their young arms from needing surgery.

"Everybody does. Tell me someone who doesn't," Boomer said. "Top-end pitchers who don't go under the knife.

"They're protecting him, so that's a good thing, I guess."
