Boomer Esiason was just a few days off on his prediction of when Pete Alonso would sign with the Mets, but not that it’s done, he is simply happy that the homegrown slugger is staying put in Queens.
“As a Met fan, I’m happy,” Boomer said. “That’s all I care about. I wanted to see him in the lineup this year with Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor.
“Mets fans should be really, really happy this morning.”
It felt like an inevitability as Alonso’s market seemingly disappeared, and the Mets remained as one of the lone teams in the league that still needed a first baseman. The negotiations may have frayed the relationship on both sides, but it ended in a reunion, and Boomer says Mets fans should be celebrating the news that broke on Thursday night.
“I never lost the feeling that he was going to be a Met...how it was gonna get done, that I didn’t know,” Boomer said. “But as a Met fan and someone who is really looking forward to this baseball season, I am stoked.
“I am so glad for him that he decided to do it this way and be a part of the Mets. I am part of the 80 percent of the fanbase that is stoked this morning. I am happy. I don’t give a crap what anybody says about anything. My team has a full complementary of players, and I am really happy about that.”
Now that Alonso is back, the signing of Juan Soto seems that much sweeter, and Boomer can’t wait for Opening Day.
“As a Met fan,” Boomer said. “I can’t remember the last offseason that I was this jacked up about looking forward to the season starting.”
