Pete Alonso became the first player in Mets history to have four 35-home run seasons on Wednesday, and he only needed four full seasons to do it.
A free agent after next season, Alonso will be an interesting case this offseason, as the Mets will have to decide whether to try and lock up Alonso to an extension, trade him to further bolster their farm system, or see how he performs in his walk year.
Boomer says the Mets need to pay their homegrown star.
"Yeah, you gotta keep him," Boomer said. "He's the face of your franchise. He's a homegrown star…say whatever you want about being in the Home Run Derby. He loves the sport and he loves being a New York Met.
"Look at the numbers that he's still putting up. He hasn't given up. He's carrying the team right now."
Jerry agrees, but he still understands the counter argument.
"What do you do when he starts to break down?" Jerry said. "If in three years, Pete Alonso is a 20-home run hitter, batting .202, and fans are calling up killing Billy Eppler for a bad contract, and we're probably doing the same thing. But we're saying we would do the contract?
"He's going to be 30, and you could probably trade him for a boatload…I agree with you, I would sign him…but when he's breaking down at 34, we'll be taking calls from pissed off Mets fans that they made a bad deal."
