Boomer: Mets have to trade Pete Alonso at deadline if things don't change

Pete Alonso is stuck in a miserable 2-for-36 stretch after going hitless in five at-bat on Sunday, and Boomer says the Mets star will be shipped out of town if things don't change for him and the Mets by the end of July.

"If you want to get paid and feel confident about getting paid, you have to come through in the big spots," Boomer said. "At the moment right now, I can't say that's what Pete Alonso is doing. He's not coming through in the big spots.

"If it continues this way, and Pete and the team lose games like this and lose the way they've been losing, you know by the trade deadline, they have to trade him."

Gio isn't sure if it would definitely mean that Alonso would be traded if he and the Mets don't turn it around by the All-Star break, but he can't rule out the possibility that Alonso is still laboring through a rough year in the next two months.

"When you have that contract year, and you bet on yourself, and you hired Scott Boras…it isn't that easy to all of a sudden just turn it on," Gio said. "Is Pete that kind of superstar that can do that, or is this going to get to him and then compound itself, and all of a sudden we have this negative avalanche and Pete Alonso is a shell of himself at the trade deadline?"
