Boomer: Pete Alonso looks like a player 'stuck in neutral' and in his head
Boomer Esiason opened Thursday's show lamenting the "mediocrity" that Pete Alonso has been stuck in all season, a trend that continued in Wednesday night's loss to the Brewers as Alonso went 1-for-4 with a single and a strikeout.
Alonso's night also included bouncing into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners in the first, where Alonso fell over his own bat while running out of the box.
"If there's one thing that kind of exemplifies what Pete Alonso is going through, it's tripping over your own bat," Boomer said. "Now is not the time for that.
"The expectations for him have been huge all year. He's been the home run hitter, the slugger, the guy we all loved…but he is mired in such mediocrity right now, and it's in his head. That play right there, you're sitting there and watching it, and you just know he's gonna beat it out. And then you're like, 'Where is he?'"
Boomer says time is running out for Alonso to make an impact, and if New York loses in Thursday's decisive game three, it's hard to believe that David Stearns and company will have much motivation to keep Alonso in Queens next year and beyond.
"It's like he's stuck. He's stuck in neutral, and it's really unfortunate, because he's the guy that can do it," Boomer said. "He's never really cranked it up. His September was not great…he's just stuck in neutral. I don't know what else to say.
"I just can't imagine the Mets even remotely thinking about that if it ends the way that yesterday went."
