Boomer: Time for Pete Alonso to 'show up' and carry Mets 'for a month'
Pete Alonso had a big night at the plate in the Mets' blowout win over the Twins on Monday, crushing a no-doubt home run and lining a double to the opposite field to finish with two RBI and three runs scored.
It was Alonso's second straight game with a home run, and third straight game with an extra-base hit, raising his season OPS to an even .800.
As the Mets head towards August looking to cement themselves in a Wild Card spot, Boomer wants to see Alonso put the lineup on his back for a stretch, something he hasn't done yet in his contract season.
"We need Pete Alonso to show up," Boomer said. "We need him to carry this team for a month. He hasn't really done that yet, and he's capable of doing that.
"Imagine what it would be like if that came to pass."
Peak Alonso paired with the hitter Francisco Lindor has been since moving to the leadoff spot, a steady Brandon Nimmo, an improved Jeff McNeil, and a proven veteran in J.D. Martinez is a lineup that can do damage against almost anybody, and Boomer hopes Mets fans get to see that in 2024, and wonders if Alonso's recent "encouraging" at-bats are a sign of what's to come.
