Brandon Nimmo is set to become a free agent for the first time in his career at the end of this season, unless the homegrown Met and the only team he has ever known could agree on an extension before this winter.
Arriving at spring training camp on Saturday, the outfielder was asked about a potential extension, and Nimmo said he would be open to it if he were approached.
"This is all I've known, being a New York Met, and I like the direction that this team is headed," Nimmo said. "I think that Steve [Cohen] at the helm of things is, he wants to win and will do what it takes to win. That's what you need, first and foremost, is someone that's willing to do it."
One of the moves Cohen made was adding Starling Marte and Mark Canha into the outfield fold before the lockout, which made Nimmo's future in New York at least a little cloudier than before. But there is still a spot in the outfield for Nimmo, even if it isn't in center field, where he has said he wants to play. Still, Nimmo was one of the best offensive performers for the Mets last season, batting .292 with an .838 OPS while injuries limited him to 92 games.
The former first-round pick has turned in six productive seasons in New York, and would be open to more.
"I know being here for as long as I have, every year, all I hear about is the '69 Mets and the '86 Mets," Nimmo said. "I want to be one of those teams that brings a World Series back. I think that would be amazing to have a parade in New York. I would like to be a part of that. I haven't been approached. We'll see what happens, but definitely not against it."
For now, Nimmo will keep his focus on the 2022 season and helping the Mets meet their high expectations.
"It's good to be back," Nimmo said. "It's good to be back in the Florida weather and the Florida wind. We're excited. I've been preparing for a while now for it, and I'm just excited to get with the guys and start building chemistry and camaraderie and start pushing towards that ultimate goal."
