Brandon Nimmo 'not a huge fan' new CBT tier: 'That's Steve's tax, basically'

When asked about the new fourth tax tier on the CBT as part of the new CBA, Brandon Nimmo had a new nickname for that threshold.

"Yeah, the Cohen tax," Nimmo said at Mets camp on Saturday.

The new penalty tier, which kicks in after a team goes $60 million over the new threshold, which is at $230 million this year, means owners like Steve Cohen would have to pay more money if he eclipses a payroll of $290 million, a possible mark after inking Max Scherzer to a record deal after signing Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar to contracts.

The Dodgers would be another team that could flirt with crossing the new tier, but Nimmo admits he isn't a huge fan of a new penalty that seems to take aim at free spenders like Cohen, easily the richest owner in baseball by nearly $5 billion.

"Obviously I'm not a huge fan, because that's Steve's tax, basically," Nimmo said. "But it was something they were passionate about and they wanted it. That was one thing we weren't totally for. I get it I guess…definitely didn't want to limit him from spending the money that he wants to spend how he wants, but it is what it is."
