Tiki and Tierney agree that the Mets haven't been getting what they need from a leadership perspective, whether it be Buck Showalter's ever-changing lineups of Billy Eppler's trade deadline acquisitions like Darin Ruf and Daniel Vogelbach that didn't pan out.
BT is focusing his blame on Eppler, and says the former Angels GM shouldn't have gotten the Mets job in the first place.
"Billy Eppler should not have been hired," BT said. "He's not the guy to fix this mess, so that's equally problematic. To me, he was brought here without merit, based on what he did with the Angels. He didn't do much with them. Everybody knows it. He had two of the best players in baseball and did nothing."
BT says the Mets' 101-win season in 2022 masked Eppler's shortcomings, while Cohen's seemingly unlimited wallet has also made it easier for Eppler to skate by. But now, as the team struggles, Eppler's deficiencies are more glaring, and show that hiring him was not the right move.
"It was impressive a year ago," BT said. "A lot of the pieces were here and he inherited, some of his pieces worked out and some didn't. you have to give him credit on a couple things, but I don't see him fixing it.
"To me, Billy Eppler is not the asset that a general manager needs to be when things go awry."
