The Mets traded one of their best deadline commodities on Thursday night, sending David Robertson to the Marlins for a pair of low-level prospects.
With the trade of Robertson, other veterans are expected to be moved, particularly Tommy Pham, and maybe even Mark Canha and Justin Verlander. But BT wonders if the Mets need to make an even bigger move, not at the deadline, but once the season is over.
"Maybe the best bridge to get to a better tomorrow is to trade Pete Alonso this winter," BT said to Sal. "Would you even be remotely open to trading a guy - what would get for a guy who is 28 and hits 40 bombs ever year?"
Sal was skeptical, but open to the idea, though he wondered how the Mets would get a player in return who could become better than Alonso, who is currently one of the top power hitters in the game.
"Look what the Braves did with Freddie Freeman," BT said. "They got Matt Olson. Someone is always replaceable. Matt Olson is having a better year than Pete Alonso.
"Maybe the only avenue for the Mets to really accelerate their growth is to think about trading Pete."
