Brodie Van Wagenen on client Robinson Cano: 'He can still make a meaningful contribution for a team'

Robinson Cano is likely on his way to being released by the Mets after he was designated for assignment on Monday morning, the victim of league-wide roster trimmings that cut down from 28 to 26 players.

The move was a bit of a surprise given the nearly $37 million Cano is owed through next season, but he was struggled badly to start the season following a year-long suspension in 2021, and New York elected to move on.

As for Cano, he hopes to sign on elsewhere and continue his playing career, as his agent and former Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen told Joel Sherman of the New York Post shortly after the Mets announced the move.

“Robbie absolutely still wants to play,” Van Wagenen told Sherman. “Given the right situation, he can still make a meaningful contribution for a team.”

Cano has a lowly .501 OPS in 43 plate appearances this season, striking out 11 times against two walks. He was a force at the plate in the shortened 2020 campaign, batting .316 with 10 home runs over 49 games, but at 39 years old, he is clearly on the decline. But with the universal DH, there is a shot that another team takes a chance on the eight-time All-Star.
