After hearing the response from Mets fans in the wake of the team reportedly moving on from trying to retain Pete Alonso, Sal Licata can’t believe how quickly fans seem to forget the job that Steve Cohen and David Stearns have done together so far.
“There is a lack of trust in Steve Cohen and David Stearns,” Sal said. “I understand why a Met fan would have that 3-5 years ago, but to have that lack of trust now in Steve Cohen and David Stearns, to me, it makes absolutely no sense.
“We’ve been down this road before with this owner specifically, and the GM/president of baseball operations proved himself a year ago. What’s all the fuss about?”
Alonso is a homegrown slugger that has the love of much of the fanbase, and would undeniably help the team win in 2025. But if he is moving on, Sal says there should be trust that Stearns will make the necessary moves to make up for Alonso’s absence, and Cohen will be willing to pay what it takes to make those moves.
“It may take some patience here...on paper, I would still argue that this team is better than last year,” Sal said. “At some point, you actually have to trust the owner who has proven himself to go all in multiple times over, and a president of baseball operations who proved himself in year one.”
BT was in full agreement, and says Mets fans are out of touch if they are immediately criticizing the front office for Alonso’s seemingly inevitable departure.
“It is amazing to me how disconnected Mets fans are right now to a general manager who just over-delivered a year ago - year one on the job - and Soto with more moves, which are coming, has you set up to be even better this year,” BT said. “What is going on?”
