BT & Sal on Mets retiring David Wright's No. 5 next year: 'Best Met of all time outside of Tom Seaver'

According to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, the Mets will retire David Wright’s No. 5 on July 19 against the Reds, as the beloved third baseman will become the latest franchise great to see his number hung high above Citi Field.

BT and Sal were live on the air to react to the breaking news, and BT says it could not happen to a player more deserving, as he sees Wright as the greatest position player in franchise history.

“I love it. We’ve seen this for about two weeks or so floating out there,” BT said. “To me, David Wright is the best Met of all time, outside of Tom Seaver as a pitcher.

“When you look at a couple of years that David Wright had where he stole bases, Gold Glove, power, hit .320, 35-40 doubles. David Wright was awesome.”

A homegrown Met and a first-round draft pick, Wright exceeded the hype by being voted to seven All-Star teams in an eight-year span from 2006 to 2013. In that span, a total of 991 games, Wright hit an even .300 with an .883 OPS and 155 home runs, earning two Gold Glove awards along the way. Back issues took away his prime too soon, but he still ranks tops in Mets history in career WAR, plate appearances, doubles, RBI, total bases, and extra-base hits, making the decision to retire his No. 5 forever a no-brainer.

“I’m happy for David,” Sal said. “We know how much this means to him.”
