The Astros clearly aren’t resting on their laurels after winning the World Series, signing Jose Abreu to a three-year deal to add more offensive firepower to the middle of their already scary lineup.
BT wants to know when the two New York teams, particularly the Mets, will wake up and follow suit.
“Were the Mets even involved in Jose Abreu?” BT said. “Were they even connected at all? I didn’t see any real connection…and I’d like to know why.
“The Yanks and the Mets, not even [Billy] Eppler and [Brian] Cashman, but ownership, needs to understand that the world champs just went out and got a guy who hit .304 last year who has a career OPS of .860…and we’re worried about just retaining Judge and deGrom? That’s not gonna work. What they need to do it bring back Judge and deGrom, and go out and get some other players.”
The Yanks and Mets both have a first baseman in Anthony Rizzo and Pete Alonso, but for the Mets, the DH role isn’t solidified, certainly not with a hitter of the caliber of Abreu, who posed a 133 OPS+ last season, and BT would have liked to have seen at least some interest or aggressiveness to try and nab the 35-year-old.
“I can see why maybe the Yankees don’t go that route because Stanton needs to DH a lot because of the leg issues and they brought Rizzo back, which is a good thing,” BT said. “But you tell me Jose Abreu wouldn’t have been awesome for the Mets?
“He’s durable…he’s not gonna hit you 40 home runs, but who would you rather have coming up? [Mark] Canha, [Daniel] Vogelbach, really?”
