BT: Mets next move should be trading Tommy Pham to make room for Ronny Mauricio

Steve Cohen told reporters on Wednesday that he would not be adding at the trade deadline if the Mets didn’t improve their standing in the Wild Card race.

So, with that in mind, BT has a move he says New York should do immediately to begin the youth movement.

“I would trade Tommy Pham and I would call [Ronny] Mauricio up,” BT said.

Pham has been one of the Mets’ best hitters this season, posting an .828 OPS with eight home runs and nine stolen bases. He is on a one-year, $6 million deal, and if New York isn’t going anywhere this season, BT says it’s time to capitalize on Pham’s current value and deal the 35-year-old to a contender.

“He’s on a nice streak and is playing well, but Tommy Pham isn’t a piece of the future,” BT said. “Maybe you find a team that needs a righty bat…and you call up Mauricio.

“I’m starting the future now with those little, ancillary moves. The Scherzer and Verlander stuff, we’ll see where we are in a couple weeks. But I can at least start to send a little message, and it’s not against Pham. But there’s gotta be a contender out there…and you’re not even getting anything back. You’re just opening a spot up for a kid.”

Mauricio is batting .311 with an .874 OPS in Triple-A, though he has taken the bulk of his fielding at shortstop. Still, he has made seven starts in left field, and the Mets would like the 22-year-old to learn the outfield considering their infield spots at the big-league level are taken up by Brett Baty, Francisco Lindor, and Jeff McNeil.

The Mets have already dealt away a veteran in Eduardo Escobar for a pair of pitching prospects from the Angels, though Pham is a much more integral part of New York’s offense.
