BT: Trading Pete Alonso would be best move for Mets' long-term outlook

The Mets are in a period of transition, and BT says the team should fully lean into the rebuild and further restock the farm system by trading homegrown star Pete Alonso.

Alonso, one of the best power hitters in the league since debuting in 2019, has lifted his season OPS back up to .815, and has 31 home runs on the year. He is a free agent at the end of next season, and BT says the Mets would be better suited in the long run if they dealt Alonso before then.

"This is not Alonso shade," BT said. "This is more greater, grander vision for the Mets. I believe Pete Alonso can be repurposed with four prospects, two of whom will be can't miss. You pair them with Alvarez, Acuna, Drew Gilbert - when the system bears the fruit of development, I believe the Mets will be in a better position then, then they would be if they gave Pete Alonso $200 million."

BT doesn't deny Alonso's current talent and production, but he believes the first baseman will already be on his decline by the time the Mets are ready to compete again, so why not deal him in his prime for a premium prospect haul?

"Do you think Pete Alonso is going to age gracefully?" BT said. "What dos his body look like at 32-33? He's a big, thick, burly, strong guy, which is great when you're still in your prime. That prime closes quicker than the guy who is lean with a little length."
