Buck Showalter wasn't making any excuses after the Mets' latest loss, simply declaring that his struggling group has to play better in order to get back over the .500 mark.
"There's a lot of things I can say, but it sounds like excuses and we're not going there," Showalter said. "Play better.
"We control it, it's not like there's some outside element. Just play better."
The offense clearly needs to step up to help the team start grabbing wins, but the rotation has also struggled to give the bullpen any kind of length. Joey Lucchesi, pitching on short rest, became the latest starter failing to pitch into the sixth inning, and the Rockies responded by plating seven runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
With the starting rotation officially a major concern, Showalter is holding out hope that the group will get healthy and find its way.
"We know guys like [David] Peterson and [Tylor] Megill are capable of pitching well," Showalter said. "We know Max [Scherzer] and Justin [Verlander], and [Jose] Quintana at some point, and [Carlos] Carrasco is just around the corner…I trust the track record. Obviously there's a different game going on between the lines this year, so I think our guys will make the adjustments to that."
