Former Yankees and Orioles manager Buck Showalter isn't ruling out a return to Gotham -- this time perhaps with the Mets.
Recently asked about his potential interest in managerial vacancies with the Mets and Padres, the 65-year-old MLB Network analyst confirmed he's still open to managing and would be willing to listen to any team with an opening.
"I don't talk about jobs that aren't currently open, so the ones that are, it's always an honor just to be mentioned," Showalter told Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic. "They got a lot of good, qualified people to pick from. I don't know (if I will be asked to interview). That's not my decision, but I'd listen if they (the Padres or Mets) called. Like I said, it's an honor just to be mentioned."
The Padres have already even done some background research on Showalter, ESPN's Buster Olney reported on Monday.
most recently managed the Orioles, from 2010-2018. He led the team to three postseason appearances, including in 2012, which ended a 15-year drought.
Prior to that, he had a four-year stint with the Texas Rangers, three years with the Diamondbacks in the late 90s, and four years with the Yankees from 1992-95, when their young core of future stars was developing. He was the last Yankees manager before Joe Torre's 12-year, four-title run.
Across 20 seasons as a manager, Showalter has a record of 1,551-1,517.
The Mets meanwhile have lacked stability at manager since the departure of Terry Collins after the 2017 season.
Mickey Callaway, now disgraced, and Luis Rojas both underwhelmed in two seasons on the job. In between, Carlos Beltran's tenure never got off the ground owing to the Astros cheating scandal.
The mediocrity has some wondering whether the Mets will turn to a more established entity with their next hire.
The Mets' second-half collapse both on and off the field has prompted the offseason shakeup, including parting ways with Rojas as well as the search for a full-time general manager.
