The Mets have seemingly begun their sell-off with the trade of David Robertson, but C-Mac can’t understand why the organization chose Thursday night to be when they began the fire sale.
“If you’re gonna punt on a season with a team with the highest payroll in baseball, you better get reasonably good prospects,” C-Mac said. “You better get some guys who can help this team next year, otherwise, I’d rather take my chances.
“In three or four years, we might be able to dial up this audio and go, ‘You know what Chris, you’re an idiot.’ But this is what you get? Two rookie ball prospects? These guys are 18 and 19 years old. Who knows when they’ll be able to help you?”
Robertson was one of the most coveted relief arms on the market, boasting a 2.05 ERA on the season and a wealth of playoff experience. So, to get two low-level minor leaguers, both of whom are position players, didn’t seem like nearly enough of a return for C-Mac, though it does confirm that the season is over.
“This is the deal you make days before the deadline?” C-Mac said. “You don’t see how it goes against the Nationals and Kansas City? You move this early to get this package? I’m sorry, I don’t understand it.
“It’s done, Mets fans. It’s over…Make no mistake, I don’t know how far the trades go from here, but to me, this is selling. I would think this indicates they’re probably selling everything they can. This is waving the white flag. The season is over.”
