C-Mac: Darry Strawberry, take note from Dwight Gooden to not mention Yankees success

Dwight Gooden’s No. 16 was retired at Citi Field on Sunday afternoon, but the former Mets great heard some boos during his speech after mentioning the Yankees’ Subway Series win over the Mets in the 2000 World Series.

Gooden quickly noted “I’ll always be a Met,” and the cheers resumed, but C-Mac, laughing at the response from the crowd, said Darryl Strawberry should take notes for when his number is retired later this season.

“I hope Darryl was paying attention,” C-Mac said. “The one thing you don’t want to do, maybe you lay off on winning championships with the Yankees.

“So Darryl, please. We understand it’s a Met day. You don’t have to mention the Yankees. We know you were there, buddy.”

Strawberry, like Gooden, enjoyed a second wind in his career with the Yankees, which led to World Series titles, but C-Mac says he should likely skip over that part of his career when he speaks to Mets fans at Citi Field.

“I was like, ‘Did he just say won the World Series?’” C-Mac said. “Maybe leave that one out.”
