C-Mac: Hope of Pete Alonso having a good season is done, but all is not lost in contract year

Pete Alonso finally had a monster night for the Mets on Wednesday, going 4-for-4 with a home run and a double in a blowout win over the A's.

The big night raised Alonso's season batting average to .246, and his OPS back above .800 at .804. It's still not the numbers Alonso is used to, but C-Mac says all can be forgotten and forgiven if the Mets slugger goes off for the next two months.

"The idea of him having a good season is gone. Unless he really goes on a freaking tear," C-Mac said. "But the idea of him having a good Pete Alonso season, it's not gonna happen. But from this point on, you can have an impact and help this team win. And if you do get in the playoffs and carry this team to the postseason and get a chance to perform in the playoffs, you've just resurrected your whole season, your value, and the money you can make in the offseason.

"You carry this team into the playoffs and get hot in the playoffs and hit a bunch of home runs, you're gonna make a lot of money. All is not lost for Pete Alonso. I know he's very concerned about this and it's weighing on him, but he has an opportunity to up his value immensely."

Alonso has had a disappointing contract year for his standards, and while the overall numbers likely won't get to where he expected them to be heading into free agency, to have the lasting image from his 2024 campaign be carrying the Mets into the playoffs and performing in October, that could help Alonso get his big payday.

"He's gotta carry this team into the playoffs and perform in the postseason, and the entire first three quarters of the season will be forgotten," C-Mac said. "And everyone will talk about how he played down the stretch and in the postseason. That's it."
