C-Mac: Mets fighting back, defying odds should no longer be a surprise
The Mets had to fly to Milwaukee after a doubleheader and champagne celebration, only to play a playoff game less than 24 hours later.
Jet lag, fatigue, and emotional exhaustion were all concerns heading into Tuesday's Wild Card Series opener. Instead, New York battled back from a 2-0 and 4-3 deficit to cruise past the Brewers 8-4 to put themselves on the cusp of advancing to their first NLDS appearance since 2015.
The ability for the Mets to overcome the travel and time crunch to perform in their playoff opener may have been a surprise to some, but at this point, it's no shock to Chris McMonigle.
"It's a Mets world, and we're just living in it," C-Mac said. "I understand if you want to say that this Mets team could have, or had excuses, that nobody would have been surprised if they came out flat. I would have been surprised.
"I expect this team to show up in the manner that they did in this game. I expect it at this point. I'm surprised when they don't."
The Mets have been answering the call since the start of June, as they have been one of the best teams in baseball since that point. They answered the call when they had to go back to Atlanta for a doubleheader to decide their playoff fate after the last scheduled day of the regular season, and C-Mac is not surprised that they got themselves up to answer the call again on Tuesday.
"I don't think it's even a talking point of what a superb job they did coming off of [Monday]," C-Mac said. "That's what needs to be done, and they've done what needs to be done every stinking time."
