Mark Vientos has opened the Triple-A season on a tear, hitting another home run on Wednesday night to raise his season OPS to 1.016 through 10 games.
Meanwhile, the Mets don’t have their veteran DH in J.D. Martinez, who is out with lower back tightness after getting a cortisone shot as he tries to work his way back to game shape.
C-Mac believes the entire situation was botched by the Mets, from the timing of the Martinez signing to the decision to immediately demote Vientos.
“Nobody was against the J.D. Martinez signing. I was still screaming for it,” C-Mac said. “As Vientos continues to mash in Triple-A, I don’t know what you do with him. If you knew it was gonna take time for J.D. Martinez to be healthy, why isn’t Vientos on this team?
“I don’t understand how the Mets handled this. I hated waiting until the last minute. I hated sending Vientos down as soon as you signed him. You’re gonna have a month into this year where you could have had a look at Vientos.”
C-Mac wondered what happened to the Mets’ plan of getting a look at their youngsters this season after signing Martinez, and now that Martinez still hasn’t made his debut, why weren’t the Mets using this time to see what they had in Vientos at the big league level?
“You told me the plan was to see him,” C-Mac said. “I know you probably expected to see J.D. Martinez quicker than this…but I just feel like the Mets mismanaged this entire thing.”
