As rumors continue to swirl about Pete Alonso’s Mets future, C-Mac isn’t budging in his belief that the Mets need to pay their homegrown star to keep him in Queens for the long haul.
But that doesn’t mean they need to do it now.
“I want him paid, I want him on the team moving forward,” C-Mac said. “Giving him a contract now makes sense to me, but I don’t think they have to. I’m one of those people where I don’t mind, especially with a billionaire owner, playing it through and letting him get to free agency. He doesn’t want to go anywhere, and the Mets will pay him.
“He’s going to be a Met if they don’t trade him. So, do you have to extend him now? You don’t. you can, and I trust him enough where I don’t need to see this final year to be confident with him, but anything could happen. He could miss some time and save you some money.”
Alonso is a free agent after next season, and while not signing him until next winter would raise a lot of questions about his future, C-Mac believes Alonso wants to spend the rest of his career as a Met, so why not play out the 2024 season and see what the market is for the slugging first baseman?
“I have no fear, with Steve Cohen leading the franchise, of him losing Pete Alonso if he wants Pete Alonso,” C-Mac said. “They lost the face of the franchise because they didn’t want him.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with letting it play out. I don’t think there’s much of a fear.”
