C-Mac: Pete Alonso isn't a selfish player, but his comments were selfish

C-Mac doesn’t believe Pete Alonso is a selfish player or a bad locker room presence, but his viral comments on Monday didn’t help change the minds of anyone who believes the contrary.

Alonso pointed to his home run pace and his All-Star nod when asked about his underwhelming season, and C-Mac said it was a bad look for a player who just can’t seem to stop digging himself more of a hole as he gets closer to free agency.

“For the first time, I’m really starting to realize that this has weighed on him on such a level that he’s so defensive in his comments and so selfish in his thought process with these comments,” C-Mac said. “I’m not saying he’s a selfish player, but these comments are selfish. What he said speaks volumes to me.”

C-Mac said there were multiple holes in Alonso’s comments, and as one of the leaders in the Mets clubhouse, Alonso has to be more aware with what he says into a microphone, as the fanbase and his teammates likely didn’t like what he had to say on Monday.

“That is as bad an answer that you can give to that question as I’ve ever heard,” C-Mac said. “One, he’s not on pace for 40 home runs. He’s on pace for 33. The idea that he’s having a normal, on pace for 40 homer season, he’s not.

“He knows the perception, and he has to understand who he’s talking to. He’s not talking to that reporter, he’s talking to you. He’s talking to Mets fans.”
