C-Mac: Mets thriller 'one of the greatest baseball games I've ever seen'
Chris McMonigle had some hours to reflect on what he just witnessed in the Mets' thrilling comeback win over the Braves to clinch a playoff berth on Monday afternoon, and when it was time to go on the air Tuesday morning, his opinion hadn't changed.
The thrilling victory for New York was an all-time classic.
"That was one of the greatest baseball games I've ever seen," C-Mac said. "I was completely locked in."
Major League Baseball had been rightfully criticized for its lack of foresight and planning after two Mets/Braves games were postponed the week before, necessitating a doubleheader the day before the start of the postseason to determine who would make the playoffs. But that doubleheader being the only baseball on that day only enhanced the tension and the stakes as the two division rivals went back and forth in one of the greatest games in Mets history.
"It needed to be standalone. It needed to be in the middle of the afternoon," C-Mac said. "Everything about it will be immortalized and remembered forever."
C-Mac had no horse in the race, but the emotions of the last two innings became so great, he found himself behaving as if his Yanks were playing with a playoff spot on the line, and for the Mets to come back and win after exhausting their bullpen, it was as good as it gets.
"I was doing my typical Yankee fan stuff. I was pacing," C-Mac said. "I hit the floor when Albies' ball hit off the wall…how could you not be enthralled with that game?"
