Amid reports that the Brewers made a strong push to acquire Pete Alonso at the trade deadline, C-Mac says the Mets should be more focused on signing their homegrown slugger to an extension rather than trading him.
"The Mets would be absolutely foolish to trade Pete Alonso," C-Mac said. "Whatever you think of him…I don't know if there are any problems inside the clubhouse, but he hits 40 home runs and drives in 120 runs every single year. That's what Alonso does."
Alonso will certainly eclipse 40 home runs this year, perhaps even flirt with 50, and at 28 years old, plays every day while putting in the work to be an average defender at first base. For C-Mac, investing in that kind of proven talent beats hoping that the prospects acquired in a trade for him could eventually become what Alonso already is.
"It's hard to find guys who do what Pete Alonso does," C-Mac said. "He plays all the time…he don't miss. Why would you get rid of that? For what, hope of a prospect? I don't get it. I don't know why they were discussing it at the trade deadline."
