C-Mac: Pete Alonso has been so bad, argument could be made to sit him in game three
Pete Alonso went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in Wednesday's loss to the Brewers, bouncing into a double play in the top of the first with runners at the corners and one out, and the Mets looking to once again jump on the opposing starter early.
Alonso also struck out with a runner in scoring position later in the game, as he is still waiting to break out in what has been an underwhelming contract year.
Chris McMonigle says Alonso has been flat-out bad, and if things don't change before the Mets season ends, he sees Alonso becoming vilified in Queens.
"He's been brutal. I'm surprised I haven't taken more calls specifically on that," C-Mac said. "I'm surprised I haven't gotten more hate on Pete Alonso. Because I don't disagree. He's been brutally bad.
"He's been so unproductive. It's amazing how he hasn't impacted anything."
Alonso drew a few walks in game one, but C-Mac says the Mets slugger hasn't come up clutch in big spots, something that plagued him throughout the regular season as well, and that needs to change in a hurry.
"That hit in the seventh inning, it almost works against him," C-Mac said, noting that Alonso's lone hit came with two outs and nobody on base. "Sure, with two outs and nobody on, but what about in the first inning with runners at the corners?
"There is no doubt. He has been brutally bad…you could argue to play [Mark] Vientos at first base. That's how bad he's been."
