Cameron Maybin appeared on MLB Network on Tuesday night and named his under-the-radar free agent as Dominic Smith, who was recently non-tendered by the Mets.
“One of the sweetest swings in the game, I think he got in kind of a tough situation when [the Mets] go out and get Starling Marte, [Mark] Canha, and you have [Pete Alonso] at first,” Maybin said.
“Dom Smith, he’s a guy who can hit the ball with quality at-bats…make him your first baseman and pencil him in and let him do his thing every day. He can play left field and DH as well, and he’s a hungry guy.”
The Mets expressed their faith in Smith early last season when they cut Robinson Cano to satisfy roster cuts, keeping Smith on the roster. But Smith, so promising at the plate in 2020, slumped badly and finished his season in the minors after New York made moves at the trade deadline to fill his spot, acquiring Darin Ruf and Daniel Vogelbach.
But Maybin says the Padres could be a good fit for Smith, who just needs regular at-bats to find his groove like the one he enjoyed two years ago.
