Move over Charley Smith – Cameron Maybin is officially the worst Mets neophyte of all-time.
Cameron Maybin flied out to right field in his second plate appearance in Saturday’s game with the Braves, pushing his line to 0-for-27 on the season – officially passing Smith for the longest hitless streak to begin a Mets tenure.
Maybin tied Smith by going 0-for-5 in Thursday’s doubleheader, and after Friday’s rainout, he was in Saturday’s lineup hitting eighth. The 35-year-old was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance, but when he came up in the fourth inning, his looper to Ronald Acuna Jr. made dubious history.
A career .254 hitter entering Saturday, Maybin was 4-for-39 with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate before the Mets acquired him for $1 earlier this month. The 0-for-27 start makes his cumulative batting average .061 as of the record-setting AB.
However, Maybin is in no danger of being benched or let go right now, as the Mets legitimately have no healthy position players on their 40-man roster outside of those currently active, and manager Luis Rojas has been very pleased with the veteran’s defense despite the offensive zero.
“We are still waiting for him to click and get better at-bats, but right now, he is giving us center field, and you want to play defense,” Rojas said after Thursday’s doubleheader. “I think it’s big for us to have him play center and we can have Billy McKinney play one of the corners. Defense is going to be a difference-maker for us, the way guys are throwing the ball.”
