WATCH: Carlos Carrasco faces live batters, moves closer to Mets debut

In another crucial step toward his Mets debut, Carlos Carrasco faced batters in a live batting practice session at Citi Field on Tuesday, and is still on track for a return later this month.

The 34-year-old tossed one simulated inning, facing three batters and throwing 20 pitches. He will throw another session this weekend.

Carrasco, part of the trade that brought Francisco Lindor to New York, hasn't pitched for the Mets yet this season after suffering a torn hamstring in spring training, an injury that brought about multiple setbacks as strength tests on the hamstring continued to show that more recovery time was needed.

But the veteran righty looked sharp in Tuesday's session, manager Luis Rojas said. Carrasco hit the mid-90s for a midseason-like velocity. He will need to go on a rehab assignment before joining the Mets, who could use a rotation boost following injuries to Joey Lucchesi and David Peterson, while Noah Syndergaard's return was pushed back because of a setback of his own.

Tuesday was the first time Carrasco faced live batters during his recovery.
