You can put Cookie’s Mets organization debut in the books, as Carlos Carrasco threw two scoreless innings for the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones on Thursday night in his first rehab appearance.
Carrasco has missed the entire season so far due to a torn hamstring suffered in spring training, but he showed no ill effects at Maimonides Park. A 1-2-3 first inning saw a groundout, a strikeout, and a pop out, and in the second, Carrasco worked around a one-out single, fanning Cole Stobb to end his night.
Two innings, one hit, two K’s, and a lot of love from those on Coney Island.
Carrasco threw 17 of his 27 pitches for strikes and registered as high as 94 MPH on his fastball, and said that he can’t wait to get back to help his teammates.
“After my first game in three months…this feels great, and I can’t wait to get back and pitch at Citi Field,” Carrasco said. “It’s unbelievable the way they’ve played, and I can’t wait to get there. It’s coming soon…I’m really close. Everything feels fine.”
He also had some praise for Francisco Alvarez, the Mets’ No.
1 prospect and his catcher for the night.
“He’s really good, and he’s really smart. I like the way he thinks, and looks at every inning, every hitter, every swing,” Carrasco said. “He’s going to be really good. Those guys that want to follow the game and see everything, it’s really important to follow those steps. He’s in a really good spot.”
Late-July still seems like a possible timeline for Carrasco’s first major-league start, although there has been scuttlebutt that the Mets may activate him as soon as next week to start as soon as Tuesday.
