The Yankees enjoyed a nice day at the ballpark on Wednesday, welcoming back their homegrown superstar in Aaron Judge on a nine-year deal, and naming him the 16th captain in franchise history.
Previous captains like Derek Jeter and Willie Randolph were in attendance to acknowledge the new captain, and ownership celebrated the prospect of locking up a potential Yankee legend that may wind up in Monument Park in 20 years.
Still, the Yanks were on the backburner of the New York sports news day.
The headline belonged to the Mets, so used to being relegated to the bottom of the news cycle in favor of the Bronx Bombers.
"The Yankees did nothing wrong today, and they are not the story," Craig said.
"They got trumped by Steve Cohen…in a town in which we have two teams and one of those team has always been the big spender and always stopped at no expense to try to win a title, the New York Mets have now edged ahead."
Cohen's move to pluck Carlos Correa from the Giants on a $315 million deal after San Francisco balked at the star shortstop's medicals gives the Mets yet another star free agent signing, and even further reinforces that times have changed in the Big Apple. The Mets are no longer a little brother to their crosstown rivals. They are outspending the Yanks, and soon could be outperforming them on the field, and in overall interest across the city.
"The New York Yankees are a big market team," Evan said. "The New York Mets are a BIIIIIIIG market team. There is no budget, and I love it! Stevie, thank you!
"All we've done as Mets fans…is invest our hard-earned money in hope. Now we're investing our hard-earned money in an owner who is giving it right back to us."
