Mets owner Steve Cohen and Francisco Lindor sat down for dinner recently, but remain fairly far apart on a contract extension. With Thursday's deadline quickly approaching, Cohen remains hopeful Lindor will be his first big signing splash since taking over the franchise.
He made sure his Twitter followers knew where he stood on the extension talks, and his hopes to lock up the superstar shortstop who raked for the Mets during spring training.
Cohen tweeted Tuesday afternoon that he hopes Lindor "decides to sign," calling him a "heckuva player and a great guy."
Lindor and Cohen are reportedly $60 million apart on extension talks, which will end once the season starts due to Lindor preferring to focus on the season, saying he will go to free agency if a deal isn't done by Opening Day. The Mets reportedly offered 10 years and $325 million, while Lindor countered with 12 years and $385 million. According to reports, the Mets offer was the team's final one.
The Opening Day deadline will hit on Thursday night when Lindor and the Mets open the season against the Nationals.
