With Edwin Diaz likely done for the season, the Mets could turn to veteran David Robertson to handle ninth inning duties in the upcoming season.
The 37-year-old has plenty of closing experience, including posting more than 30 saves each season from 2014 to 2016, highlighted by a career-high 39 saves with the Yankees in 2014, taking over for the retired Mariano Rivera.
Robertson logged 20 saves last season, and picked up a save in the World Series last year with the Phillies.
So, if it is Robertson who slots in as the team's closer, or if it is done by committee along with Adam Ottavino and others, Robertson will be ready.
"My plan coming here was to throw whenever Buck [Showalter] called on me and asked me to go pitch," Robertson said. "It doesn't matter to me when I pitch in the game, whether it's the fifth or the ninth. If I'm asked to cover the ninth, I'll do my best."
